Remittance Houses and Transnational Citizenship: Mapping Eritrea’s Diaspora–State Relationships

Can diaspora houses be used as a site to explore transnational citizenship? Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Eritrea, this article shows that different kinds of remittance reify categories citizens with various sets rights and duties. Drawing studies state–diaspora relations houses, I illustrate the key role housing plays Eritrean state’s efforts build loyal diaspora. By looking at projects (state-led individual) over last thirty years, how groups emigrants – based their relationship state origin well status country residence have been more or less able realise aspirations house back home. doing this, show importance considering not only cultural artefacts but also political claims membership.
